Trump names top IC CIO

President Donald Trump named John Sherman to the post of CIO of the intelligence community. The job is based in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

The job was created in 2015 to get a handle on spending and security issues across the sprawling U.S. intelligence community. One of the key responsibilities of the post is managing the Intelligence Community Information Technology Enterprise or ICITE – an effort to bring a common desktop environment that reaches all 17 intelligence agencies.

The IC CIO also has procurement authority across intelligence agencies when it comes to enterprise architecture, and is authorized to weigh in on IT procurement of all types while having a voice in R&D efforts to make sure they align with the overall goals of the intelligence community.

Sherman is a 20-year veteran of the intelligence community. He comes to the ODNI from CIA, where he serves as Deputy Director of the Open Source Enterprise. Recently he's been working on building open source capabilities into ICITE. Sherman has served at the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and was a Principal Deputy National Intelligence Officer for Military Issues on the National Intelligence Council. He also has been a duty officer in the White House situation room.

Sherman takes over for acting CIO Jennifer Kron, who recently announced the expansion of ICITE to the secret and potentially the unclassified domains at an intelligence event.
