OMB tells agencies to cancel print subscriptions to Federal Register

Agencies have been told to stop subscribing to the print edition of the government's journal, the Federal Register.

Editor's note: This story was modified May 3 to correct misleading information. The Office of Management and Budget has not canceled the print edition of the Federal Register but instead directed agencies to cancel their subscriptions.

The Office of Management and Budget, looking to save money and paper, has directed agencies to cancel their print subscription to the Federal Register.

According to OMB, about 4,700 government offices receive the print edition even though all the content is available online.

The idea for canceling the print subscriptions — which came out of the Securing Americans’ Value and Efficiency presidential award program — is expected to save more than $4 million per year, according to a memo sent to all agencies April 25.

Executive branch departments and agencies are instructed to use a provided form letter to communicate the cancellation, according to the memo.
