Federal 100: Gen. Peter Chiarelli

Gen. Peter Chiarelli
Vice Chief of Staff
U.S. Army

Gen. Pete Chiarelli is effectively the chief operating officer of a $240 billion enterprise. But when it comes to improving the services and care offered to soldiers and their families, Chiarelli is an indomitable Army of one.

He has championed the use of virtual and telehealth-based treatment of victims of post-traumatic stress and brain injury, greatly increasing the treatment options available to soldiers in the United States and in battle zones.

Chiarelli also led a joint effort with the National Institute of Mental Health to develop a database of information collected by the nation’s largest mental health study. That massive effort will help researchers better understand the human brain and could eventually lead to new treatments for problems that afflict soldiers.
