State and local fusion centers play an increasingly important role in homeland security. They are especially vital to improved information sharing. They house state and local emergency responders and representatives from federal intelligence agencies such as the FBI. These people used to work in a vacuum, but the centers force them to collaborate in order to better and more quickly identify threats. As for January 2008, there are 69 fusion centers nationwide.
