Position: Deputy assistant secretary of Defense for information management and technology and deputy chief information officer and vice chairman of the CIO Council.

Tenure: He was named to his current position at the Defense Department in November 2006.

2006 Power Player position: No. 4.

What he has done: As the No. 2 person at the government’s biggest agency and the CIO Council, Wennergren continues to carry more influence than his unassuming style belies. He is poised to help set the agenda for the CIO Council as it transitions to a new administration, and his passionate commitment to IT and good government is infectious.

Challenges ahead: Many believe the CIO Council is less influential than it once was. Wennergren faces the challenge of ensuring that CIOs and information technology issues get the attention of the new administration.

FCW power forecast: Growing.
