The Internal Revenue Service has launched a new Internet-based version of its Exempt Organizations Workshop that covers tax compliance issues confronted by small and midsize tax-exempt organizations, including charities and churches.

The free online workshop, Stay Exempt-Tax Basics for 501(c)(3)s, announced Jan. 24, is for organizations that have no tax experts on staff or have limited contact with outside advisers concerning tax compliance issues, the IRS said.

The IRS' exempt Organizations Division has offered live workshops for these organizations since 2001.

"However, because of the cost and time involved in producing live versions of these workshops, we can offer only a few each year in major cities,” said Lois Lerner, director of that IRS division. “With this new online program, anyone anywhere can access a ‘virtual workshop’ whenever it’s convenient for them.”

The online workshop has five interactive modules on tax compliance topics such as required disclosure information, filing a return without errors and employment issues, according to the IRS.

Users will also find links to IRS forms and publications. The service's Web site does not require registration, and visitors remain anonymous, the IRS said.
