Port Freeport, Texas, has awarded Ciber’s Federal Solutions Division a $2.3 million port security contract.
As part of the Waterside Perimeter Protection Project, Ciber will provide an integrated solution that incorporates port security, safety and management, and Maritime Domain Awareness.
The National Plan to Achieve Maritime Domain Awareness, published in October 2005, defines Maritime Domain Awareness as the “effective understanding of anything associated with the Maritime Domain that could impact the security, safety, economy or environment of the United States.” Maritime Domain Awareness calls for maritime facilities to collect, analyze and disseminate actionable information and intelligence to the appropriate authorities.
For the Port Freeport project, Ciber will deploy its Harbor Management and Security system. The port’s current video surveillance system and wireless networks will be integrated with Ciber-provided technologies including intelligent radar, command and control situational displays, and Automatic Identification System base stations, according to the company.
Ciber fielded earlier this year a similar maritime system for the Port of Lake Charles, La.
Port Freeport ranks 13th among U.S. ports in tonnage of international cargo handled and 23rd in total domestic and foreign cargo tonnage handled, according to Army Corps of Engineers data. The port brings in $9 billion to the Texas economy, a recent economic impact study states.
