Avocent is buying LANDesk Software for up to $476 million, officials from both companies announced today. The purchase will allow federal information technology managers to streamline the tools and processes they use to manage IT in large, distributed environments, said Everett Brooks, vice president for market development at Avocent. The official agreement sets the sale price at $416 million, with the possibility of adding up to $60 million based on LANDesk’s financial performance through the end of the year, Brooks said. Avocent sells hardware that enables users to securely access all parts of their networks from any physical location and regardless of the operational state of their network components, Brooks said. LANDesk is a systems and security management software vendor specializing in products that help users monitor and secure their networks, said Bob Macfarlane, vice president of business development at LANDesk. The company also helps customers automate business processes, he added.
