The National Institute of Standards and Technology released technical specifications this week for vendors to use in products or technologies that must be compatible with the federal governments new computer-readable personal identity verification (PIV) cards.
NIST Special Publication 800-73 Revision 1 describes technical specs for the secure identity credentials that federal agencies will begin issuing to employees and contractors Oct. 27. They include a PIV data model, a communications interface and an application programming interface.
According to its authors, the 63-page document defines and interprets the PIV standards to ensure interoperability and performance.
