House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) has asked for an analysis on how federal employees could make the transition to a four-day work week. Hoyer made the request in an Aug. 4 letter to the Office of Personnel Management.
Working four 10-hours days would provide federal employees with scheduling flexibility they don't currently have, which Colleen Kelley, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, applauds.
“Rep. Hoyer should be commended for pushing OPM on this," she said in a statement issued today. "His suggestion would go a long way toward encouraging federal agencies to expand the range of options for federal employees.”
Hoyer wrote that allowing employees to take one day off their weekly commute could reduce traffic congestion in the Washington, D.C., area and allow agencies to reduce their energy consumption.
