An effort to rebuild the internet from scratch got a boost with $12 million in government funding and donations, reports the Associated Press:

The project plans to look at the internet in a whole new way to address several issues the technology struggles with such as security.

A network is being established that researchers can use to test new ideas. The National Science Foundation is providing $12 million in grants to develop prototypes for the test network called the Global Environment for Network Innovations.
