NASA’s collection of photographs, historic film and video is now available online following an agreement between the agency and a nonprofit digital library.

NASA and the San Francisco-based Internet Archive have a new online library that combines 21 major NASA imagery collections into a single, searchable resource.

The Web site's launch is the first step in a five-year partnership that will add millions of images and thousands of hours of video and audio content, with enhanced search and viewing capabilities, the agency said.

The project is designed to give students, historians, enthusiasts and researchers access to the files that have not been available, NASA Deputy Administrator Shana Dale said July 24.

“This new resource also will enable the agency to digitize and preserve historical content now not available on the Internet for future generations,” Dale said

Internet Archive will manage the site under a nonexclusive Space Act agreement, signed in July 2007. The five-year project provides images at no charge to the public.

The content of the site covers a wide range of America’s space program, including imagery from the Apollo moon missions, Hubble Space Telescope views of the universe and experimental aircraft past and present. Keyword searching is available.

The site is available at: www.nasaimages.org
