The Defense Department announced that it has asked Congress for permission to reprogram $9.7 billion of its overall budget to pay for war operations overseas, warning that it will run out of money by mid-July if Congress does not approve a supplemental funding bill.

The DOD reprogramming action announced May 28 would transfer $5.7 billion from the military personnel accounts of the other services to the Army’s military personnel account. It would also move $4 billion from the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) accounts of the other services and the DOD Working Capital Fund to the Army and Special Operations Command O&M accounts.

“Congressional approval of this $9.7 billion reprogramming will only allow another few weeks of operations until the department as a whole runs out of critical funding,” DOD said.

The Senate approved a supplemental spending package May 22 that would provide $165 billion in war funding, and the House is expected to consider the Senate version the week beginning June 2.
