Pentagon acquisition chief Kenneth Krieg announced his resignation today. He will remain in office until July 20 or until the Senate confirms his successor, whichever comes first, according to a Defense Department statement.

President Bush has yet to nominate a successor. In Defense circles, John Young, director of Defense research and engineering, is considered a possible candidate for the job.

Krieg, who held the position of undersecretary of Defense for acquisition, technology and logistics since June 2005,  will leave the department to spend more time with his family, according to the statement.
