President Bush has nominated Robert Tapella to become public printer at the Government Printing Office.
If the Senate confirms Tapella, he would face a big challenge: making the office more technologically oriented while budgets continue to shrink.
Tapella currently is chief of staff at GPO. He joined the office in June 2004. Before that, he worked for two years as a strategic communications consultant. He also was a congressional staffer from 1996 to 2000, supervising the Office of Member Services for the House Oversight Committee.
William Turri has been acting public printer since January, when former printer Bruce James retired.
“Bob and I have worked side by side for four years, and I look forward to continuing our work together as GPO moves forward in its digital and technological transformation,” Turri said.
