Two Democratic senators plan to hold a press conference on Monday to discuss the ongoing controversy surrounding Lurita Doan, administrator of the General Services Administration, and allegations about the political misuse of GSA.
Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) plan to speak at noon, but neither of the senators’ offices would divulge details about the conference, except to say that it would be interesting.
Doan is under investigation by the Office of Special Counsel for allegations of using government time and property for political motives.
The allegation of a Hatch Act violation was just one of several accusations leveled at Doan in recent months. At a March 28 House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) tried to ferret out Doan’s involvement in the White House presentation about strategies for winning back House and Senate seats for Republicans in the 2008 elections, her attempt to award a $20,000 contract to a friend and her possible intervention in awarding a contract to Sun Microsystems.
Doan said that her aggressive attempts to cut wasteful spending in agency programs ultimately landed her on Capitol Hill under close scrutiny by congressional leaders.
