The IRS’ relational database will likely process 4 million tax returns in the 2006 tax season beginning next month. Besides handling the easiest filers using the 1040EZ forms, the Customer Account Data Engine will be able to process simple 1040 forms.
That means CADE will accept the most commonly used 1040 forms with caveats, such as accepting forms only from single taxpayers with no dependents and no balance due and no accompanying schedules, such as Schedule A for itemizing deductions, said Richard Spires, associate CIO for the IRS’ business systems modernization office.
“We’re trying to drive volume into CADE and moving taxpayers from the [legacy] MasterFile,” he said.
In 2007, when IRS adds the capability to handle forms and schedules, the agency anticipates handling 30 million tax returns in CADE, Spires said.
