The commonwealth of Massachusetts awarded a four-year, $72 million contract to Maximus Inc. for a range of customer services for MassHealth, the state’s Medicaid program, company officials said today.

The contract contains options which, if exercised, would raise the total value to $168 million over 10 years.

Under the contract, Maximus of Reston, Va., will operate a contact center, enroll managed-care members and obtain transportation authorization. The company also will process provider claims, enroll and credential providers, and create and maintain self-service options for providers and members through the Internet.

The project will shift providers to a paperless, Web-based environment that is compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

MassHealth provides comprehensive health insurance or help in paying for private health insurance to nearly 1 million residents through Medicaid, state children’s health insurance programs and other state-funded health initiatives.
