Did you see the story about the supposedly racist audio clip by Governor Schwarzenegger? According to CNet, “the Democratic rival to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger acknowledged Tuesday that his aides were responsible for obtaining a controversial audio file in a move that has led to allegations of Web site hacking.”

Hacking? Are you kidding me? Read on:

The controversy may center on the design of the Web server called speeches.gov.ca.gov. The California government used it to post MP3 files of Schwarzenegger's speeches in a directory structure that looked like "http://speeches.gov.ca.gov/dir/06-21.htm.htm". (That Web page is now offline, but saved in Google's cache.)

A source close to Angelides told CNET News.com on Tuesday that it was possible to "chop" off the Web links and visit the higher-level "http://speeches.gov.ca.gov/dir/" directory, which had the controversial audio recording publicly viewable. No password was needed, the source said.

Wait, why didn’t I think of that? Or rather, I could have thought of that, had I cared.

In another case of surfer sleuthing, 18-year old Matt Foremski solved the mystery of the identity of Lonelygirl15, the subject of a popular video blog. Here’s some background, in case you are unfamiliar with this cultural icon:

The video diary posted on YouTube, chronicled the life of a home-schooled 15-year old Bree, her relationship with her parents, boyfriend, etc. According to the LATimes, “viewers have questioned whether Bree and her friend Daniel, who also appeared in the videos, were real people or part of some larger project or promotional scheme. An ominous hint of a satanic plotline to come suggested a horror film in the making.”

Mark Glaser posted a challenge to his readers to uncover the identity of Lonelygirl15, and before long, someone did. Here’s how Matt Foremski says he solved the mystery:

I was surfing the article on Lonelygirl15 on TMZ.com when I came across a comment that linked to a private MySpace page that was allegedly that of the actress who plays Lonelygirl15. As the profile was set to “private,” there was no real info one could glean from the page. However, when I queried Google for that particular MySpace user name, “jeessss426,” I found a Google cache from the page a few months ago when it was still public.

A lot of the details of the girl’s background clicked for me: She was an actress from a small city in New Zealand who had moved to Burbank recently to act. The name on the profile was “Jessica Rose.” When next I happened to query Google image search for “Jessica Rose New Zealand” I was instantly rewarded with two cached thumbnail photos of Lonelygirl15, a.k.a. Jessica Rose, from a New Zealand talent agency that had since removed the full size versions. A later search on Yahoo on “jeessss426” also turned up a whole load of pictures from her probably forgotten ImageShack account.

Does that sound difficult or wildly ingenious? No, it's another case of an informed, motivated searcher tracking down and connecting the dots in public info.
