Recently I ran across a reading list for aspiring knowledge workers. Itâs a great collection of books, many of which we probably all should have read by now. These arenât the typical self-help books for the workplace. The list advocates individual, personal growth by offering titles from leaders in the sciences, arts and business. Out of the list of about two dozen books, only a few are about IT; most are about creative thinking and active learning in a wide variety of disciplines. For example, some of the books on the list are The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life by Twyla Tharp (the choreographer), The Design of Everyday Things by Donald Norman (a cognitive scientist) and Notes on the Synthesis of Form by Christopher Alexander (a mathematician turned architect). Another is Thomas Davenportâs Thinking for a Living, which FCW columnist Steve Kelman recently reviewed.
Print out the list, take it to the bookstore and pick out a few, and let us know what you think.
