According to Gartner, the enterprise technologies weâll see in the next five to six years will have grown out of the consumer market. In order to stay on top of this trend toward the âconsumerization of IT,â Gartner recommends
Experimenting with the latest consumer technologies to determine ways your enterprise can take advantage of them. Create experimentation zones where IT staff and other users can become familiar with consumer technology and identify applications where the technology can improve collaboration, communication and efficiency or other aspects of enterprise performance. Look for ways in which consumer IT can save money in technology investment and provide benefits in unexpected areas, such as employee productivity, creativity and satisfaction.
I canât see this happening in any structured way in the office -- we're just not big enough. In fact, when trying to find out more about gaming technologies used for training (such as those covered by Serious Games), I was trying to find anyone on staff who had tried out any massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Not in our office. On the other hand, this kind of experimentation gives me a good excuse to spend time with our kids trying out MySpace , Flickr, YouTube and Second Life, which was recently featured as the Business Week cover story, indicating that it is already crossing over from consumer to enterprise technology.
