Among the dozens of reports youâve probably heard by now about the new Treasury Secretary (nominee) Henry M. Paulson, you might have heard discussion of how Goldman Sachs alums have moved a variety of high-level government jobs. The Fox News report, Goldman Sachs Executives Gifted With Public Purpose, has a good list of those folks who include New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten and former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin. This Fox story, plus the NPR report (Goldman Sachs Continues Funneling Talent to Washington) suggested that the reason we see so many ex-Goldman Sachs people in Washington is that public service is part of the companyâs corporate culture. That âpartnershipâ culture makes decisions by consensus, rewards team players and values tact and diplomacy. No surprise then that Goldman Sachs a great training ground for government service.
Goldman Sach's corporate values are not that unusual -- maybe for Wall Street, but not for tech companies. Plenty of private sector IT execs have made the move to public service (though more often at the state level).
