The 2006 CDW-G Federal Telework Report is out. It is based on interviews with both federal employees and federal IT professionals. The results are predictable, in that every year more people start teleworking, agencies are getting more support for remote and mobile workers in place and security is still a big concern. In answer to the question, âwhat do you feel is the primary IT challenge associated with telework?â¿ 51% of the respondents cited security.
If this were a survey of just IT managers, I think that 51% would shoot up to about 99% feeling challenged by security if they took a look at another teleworking study just released by SonicWall, a company that makes network security products. In that survey of 941 remote and mobile workers (as opposed to managers or IT staff) worldwide, security was not a concern:
Security came low on the list of priorities, however, with 88% of the individuals surveyed admitting to storing passwords in easily-discovered locations, and only 12% employing encrypted files to store and manage their login data. 56% said they rely on their memories to keep track of their network passwords, while others used the same passwords for all devices, stored the information on cell phones, or stuck notes with the login information onto their computer (4%).
Yikes.
