Parking-Lot Perks: Haircuts, Car Washes For Busy Tech Workers, appearing in Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal (free this week only), says that the perks once offered to dot-com employees are now showing up at large firms everywhere. But this time around, the perks are not used as bait to lure workers to specific tech companies but rather as conveniences that keep productive workers at their desks.

"We've added on-site services strictly for the efficiency and productivity of employees," says Debi Muchow, head of human resources at Cadence. The services "don't make our code writers write code, but now they don't have to run around town to get things done and they don't have to take time off."

What do you think of this? On the one hand, on-site perks tell employees that they are valuable. On the other hand, it sounds like greedy employers are trying to milk every last minute out of a worker’s day. I bet these services pay dividends for the employers, though I’m not sure how that could be measured. And if you can’t measure the benefits, it probably won’t take hold in the public sector.

So, what would be your perk of choice?
