MIT recently announced prizes for in its third annual Soldier Design Competition. Sponsored by MIT's Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies, the competition gives students a chance to solve real-world problems faced by soldiers in the field. The seven design challenges were selected by MIT and the Army.

This year’s winners included

A portable water purifier that sterilizes a liter of water in less than a minute using an ultraviolet light bulb powered by a hand crank.

A device that distills water by harnessing the waste heat from an automobile engine.

A GPS unit that works with current radio communications systems.

A lightweight polycarbonate material that augments the Army's Interceptor Body Armor system by protecting lower-risk areas of the body.

An improved door-breaching tool.

A height and velocity sensor to improve the accuracy of cargo airdrops.

A wrist-worn wireless device that monitors the hydration of soldiers in the field.
