A couple of news items on search just surfaced.

The latest Pew Internet & American Life survey finds search the second-most popular Internet application, following email. This survey, like other Pew Internet studies, confirms what you would have expected: People who are heavy Internet users have broadband connections, are in their 30s, educated, etc. They also use search.

Also, comscore Media Metrix reports the top search engines for October 2005: Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Ask Jeeves, and so on. Google is not the runaway winner.

The Search Engine Experiment might explain why. It lets you type in a phrase and delivers results from the top search engine (whose identities have been hidden). Thus you can see which search engine works best for the kind of info you usually search for. Sort of like the Pepsi Challenge. Unfortunately, you only get to see the top three results, and in my experience, the best answer is usually not one of the top three. Nevertheless, I tried several terms and was surprised at the results.

Let me know what you find.
