The Washington Post has an article today on the latest assault against FEMA: FEMA Restricts Evacuee Data, Citing Privacy. Because of privacy concerns FEMA wonât open its database of evacuees â not to families trying to locate missing loved ones, not to law enforcement officials searching for parole violators and sex offenders. And everyone is unhappy.
Katrina has put the spotlight on the issue of privacy in a networked world. In these extreme circumstances we want the efficiency that networked information allows (for health records, for example) when it works for us. But when that same efficiency holds up a diploma because of unpaid parking tickets, we donât like it.
Is it really an all or nothing choice?
