The Wall Street Journalâs free feature on Friday, Rise in Non-English Spam Challenges Junk Mail Filters, explains the recent spate of Japanese, Chinese and Russian emails Iâd been getting. Spam is cheap and easy for anyone to send, so foreign spammers are emailing US addresses in the hopes of picking up a few customers. On defense, current email filters are wrestling with separating legitimate foreign-language emails from foreign-language spam.
For us monoglots, itâs quicker and easier to sift through an inbox full of emails with Chinese characters in the subject line than to puzzle over those emails with ambiguous subjects like, âper our conversationâ? or ânotes from the meeting.â?
Have you been getting more foreign-language spam?
