Like many universities, MIT is in the process of installing wi-fi nodes to provide wireless access to the whole campus. Its iSpots project maps the networkâs nodes and users with the log information from MITâs wireless network. The maps not only show the usersâ locations, but also how they connect to the network, whether by laptops, wireless PDAs or even Wi-Fi equipped cell phones. Students can log into the iSpots site and tell if their favorite spot in the library is already occupied. Administrators and researchers can use this data to better understand how wireless technology is used, and what that means for planning spaces and administering services, according to the AP article.
In spite of the big brother shadow this casts, it seems like it would be incredibly useful for anyone planning or administering a wi-fi network or location-based network services. In hospitals? in the military?
