Businesss Weekâs cover story, Smashing The Clock, is about how Best Buy is changing the way it measures employee productivity. No longer is it measured by the number of hours employees spend at their desks or in meetings but by the amount of measureable work they produce. It is not a novel idea by any means, but the article discusses the odd way the Results Only Work Environment (ROWE) culture took hold and spread in the company â from the bottom up. Itâs a good read.
One of the sidebars to the story, How to Kill Meetings, has a couple of ideas for decreasing the number of meetings and the time wasted in them. Meetings need to be managed and focused. âIf underlings and bosses simply clarify exactly what results they need, meeting volume can be slashed dramatically,â the ROWE culture says.
One of the other tips for avoiding nonessential meetings is to deliver your input (reports, slides, budgets, whatever) ahead of time to other attendees. In some cases you might not even need to conference in.
How do you identify and avoid meaningless meetings? Or is it hopeless?
