Last week, the Washington Post story, Security Clearances Can Pay Off, referred to a survey by ClearanceJobs.com. The salary survey polled more than 700 job seekers with active or current security clearances who had registered on ClearanceJobs.com between November 20, 2005 and January 20, 2006.
Youâd think most of the high-paying jobs requiring clearances would be in the DC metro area, but they are spread across the nation â and, of course, Iraq:
Jobs in Iraq understandably offer high pay and high risks. While Ohio has always been a strong location for the military and defense industry, its high rank was not expected. Cleared candidates in New Mexico show strong earnings, most likely due to the high number of Department of Energy scientists in the area working for national laboratories like Los Alamos and Sandia. High level system engineering jobs in the Oswego and Syracuse areas of New York push salaries to a premium. Similarly, since most aerospace contractors have a strong presence in California and employ thousands of skilled electrical, design, and systems engineers, wages are naturally higher for these cleared candidates.
The other surprising aspect was that when the survey looked at the top 20 highest salaries by industry, it found that many of these jobs are IT-related. The top five, for example, are
IT Management-Executive
IT Management-Project Manager
Software Development
Project Manager
Engineering-Telecommunications
The Post article concludes by saying that ManTech is trying to fill 450 spots, half of which require a security clearance. The company is raffling off two BMWs in a recruiting campaign.
