Check out this paper on the use of IM during meetings (mostly teleconferences). The authors discuss how meeting participants’ use of IM changes the physical and social boundaries of the meeting and the way discussions flow and decisions are made. It’s a scholarly paper with lots of footnotes, but it makes the case that IMing during meetings can be an easy way to enhance meeting productivity. I’m all for that.
