Itronix, the folks that brought us the dishwasher-safeGoBook Max, are providing the PC for the Hummer Laptop. FCW this week ran a story about the Itronix GoBook VR-1, which looks like it might be the government issue version of the Hummer laptop.
I get the âHummer lifestyle.â? Or, rather, I know that it exists. From the photos of the laptops, they do look cool. Iâm glad to see a PC with personality on the outside. And everyone would love a more durable machine. But I have a couple questions about the concept.
1. Iâm asking you readers who have some familiarity with Itronixâs rugged computers (which I hear are used in the military, by first responders and field agents): Is this really a tough little PC, or is it the computer extension of the Hummer lifestyle? Meaning, is it valuable because itâs rugged or because itâs upscale and stylish?
⢠Magnesium Alloy Case with Shock-Mounted Hard Disk Drive & Display
⢠Spill-Resistant Keyboard & Palm Rest Area
⢠12" Display (same as that provided in our fully rugged Itronix products)
⢠Meets Mil-Spec 810F Vibration & Temperature Specifications
⢠30" Drop Test Certified
⢠Well-Suited for In-Vehicle Environments (even if your vehicle is not a HUMMER)
2. I canât tell if the way they are marketing this PC is insulting, a parody or just sad. Hereâs the depiction of the typical/ideal guy buyer:
STEVEâthe ACTIVE PROFESSIONAL
Steve is upper middle class, and has a penchant for fine things. He likes unique vehicles (like HUMMER) distinctive tailoring on his suits (when he wears one) but has a casual sophistication that belies his very prominent stock broker position with a top 5 firm. He enjoys fine wines, plays tennis and golf with a passion, and loves to get away with his wife to fine restaurants and enjoy down time in an otherwise very stressful life. He bought a HUMMER Laptop because:
⢠It breaks the mold of those traditional high end laptops he uses at the firm
⢠He can sport the new laptop in his black H2, and celebrate the uniqueness of his choice every time he looks at it
⢠It's heavy duty, but stylish
With its ruggedized features Steve can take it wherever his busy after hours life takes him in his HUMMER H2. He uses the GPS navigation system that's built right in to find unique restaurants in the ever changing California Wine Country.
On longer trips to their remote lake home in Sun Valley the drive is long with 2 kids in the back. So he uses the vehicle mounted laptop as a DVD player for the kids in the back. With Dual BOSE headsets plugged in, he regains the quiet in the vehicle, and he and his wife converse as the kids chill watching their favorite DVD.
Did I see that on Saturday Night Live? Let me know what you think. And let us know when and where you spot the first Hummer Laptop.

Hello, of course I came to visit your site and thanks for letting me know about it. I just read this post and wanted to say it is full of number one resources. Some I am familiar with. For those who dont know these other sites they are in for a treat as there is a lot to learn there.
