Those who donât like to make a move without first checking the Internet for more information will be delighted to find some reports on foliage conditions in the National Forests. The USDA Forest Service has a list of some hot spots for fall colors across the country, and the links to the regional sites have detailed reports covering the kinds of trees that make the best displays, what to expect this weekend, and how to get there. Unfortunately, thereâs no link to forests in Virginia.
For that, go to the Virginia Department of Forestry site, which features its âfirst ever VDOF-Recommended Fall Foliage Driving Tours.â According to the site:
Each of these tours â designed by a local VDOF forester â is sure to exceed your expectations and fill your eyes with wide swatches of vibrant yellows, reds and oranges. And, because these recommended drives are âoff the beaten path,â youâll be able to enjoy a leisurely trip without the hassles of a lot of traffic on the road or large crowds at stops along the way.
I canât vouch for all the tours on the page, but the ones originating in Harrisonburg, Staunton and Lexington are definitely off the beaten path and will take your breath away.
