This week OPM announced that it will be running television commercials that âhighlight the diverse and exciting work available in the federal governmentâ in an effort to boost federal employment in the face of the impending wave of retirements.
Among the jobs Linda Springer mentioned are âprocessing student loan applications, answering social security benefits questions, printing new currency, guiding tourists at national parks, inspecting food for safety and quality, monitoring the weather, guarding prisons, issuing patents, treating patients in VA hospitals."
A story in GovExec gives a little more detail on the highlighted jobs. It says the commercials will also feature "Elizabeth Mazzae, an engineer at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; Maxine Brown, chief of the Systems Integration Branch at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; Walter Douglas, a conservationist in the Agriculture Department." These folks sound like what Bill Nye the Science Guy used to call "way cool scientists."
Maybe itâs time for me to (again) pitch my Federal 100 television reality show. Honestly, whoâd have thought that a show about forensic scientists or White House staff would be popular? There are thousands of feds with jobs just as exciting.
OPM says the advertising campaign will be launched in various parts of the country beginning in mid-May.
