Slahsdot has a good discussion on the latest DARPA Grand Challenge. In Urban Challenge, teams will build an autonomous vehicle that can complete a 60-mile urban course populated with other traffic. Wow.

On the one hand it looks like a stretch (but that’s the point, right?) because driving in traffic is so complex. But on the other hand, I suspect most of the technology employed for the other Grand Challenges (autonomous desert driving) just needs to be modified and superpowered for this task.

The on-topic Slashdot comments about DARPA were pretty good, though I didn’t see any comparison to high-performance military jets that are essentially flown by computers.
