The Greater Washington Initiative has released its annual regional report on economic growth. Amid the upward trend lines (population, salaries, housing prices), there are couple of interesting facts:

If Greater Washington were a country: Its Gross Domestic Product would put it among the top 20 nations…and larger than Argentina, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and Turkey.

Leader in job growth: From 1999–2004, only six major metro regions had positive job growth, and Greater Washington tops the list with 314,000 new jobs. The next two regions, Houston and New York, added less than one-third as many jobs during this period.

8-to-1 ratio of private to federal workers: Only 11% of Greater Washington’s workforce is directly employed by the federal government, down from 19.8% in 1984 and 36% in 1954 — a sign of increased outsourcing.

What was going on in 1954?
