Here’s a different look at the idea of how the military prepares its officers for corporate work. A June 16, 2006 report from Korn/Ferry International, Military Experience & CEOs: Is There a Link? says that military training offers lessons in leadership – like teamwork, planning, communication -- that can prove valuable in the boardroom. Using share prices as the measure of performance, the analysis “shows that S&P 500 companies headed by CEOs with military experience outperformed other S&P 500 companies in all time frames, particularly the three- and five-year periods.”

Based on analysis of a survey of S&P 500 CEOs, the main findings are that

Military officers are over-represented among the ranks of CEOs.

CEOs with a military background are more likely to deliver strong performance.

Chief executive officers who have served in the military tend to survive longer on the job.

Ex-military CEOs are concentrated in the consumer non-cyclical and utilities sectors. By contrast, ex-military CEOs are under-represented in the consumer cyclical and technology sectors. [Why do you think that is?]

The leadership skills learned in military training enhance success in corporate life.

The appendix has a list of the 50+ S&P 500 CEOs who have military experience (as of September 30, 2005).
