On Tuesday, Research In Motion filed some court papers in an effort to keep its U.S. BlackBerry service from being shut down. Part of RIMâs argument for why it should keep its service active was the fact that it has so many government, public safety and health users who depend on the service.
Iâve mentioned before that RIM believes that the government sector âcurrently accounts for approximately ten percent of all BlackBerry subscribers.â? Presumably, contractors, lobbyists or anyone working with BlackBerry-toting government types would have RIM devices too. Thatâs a lot of customers that RIM is no doubt determined to keep.
Research In Motion said BlackBerry is a key component to the U.S. "economic security" and is part of its emergency and disaster planning. A shutdown would interrupt service to about 2 million customers in the U.S., where the device is heavily used on Wall Street and by members of Congress.
In its filing, Research In Motion included statements from a former Department of Homeland Security official who said the BlackBerry worked after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast when cell phones didn't, and the head of a New England health group who says the BlackBerry is part of its plan for a response to an avian flu outbreak.
And while I donât doubt that this is true, RIM is really pulling out all the stops. Or do you think the BlackBerry deserves to be a component of the nation's critical infrastructure?
