Christopher Diggins at the OâReilly network has a provocative column called, "Your IT Company's Biggest Enemy." And the biggest enemy of the IT company (or department) is human resources. Diggins contends that low-level HR people, when doing initial screenings to hire staff in an area where they donât have much expertise -â like IT -- tend to throw out resumes like his that show too much free-lance work, too little formal education. He says they tend to fill jobs with people who look better on paper than they probably really are. He suggests that developers get involved in the hiring process.
The sad thing is that offices with this problem -- those that are passing up quality hires because they don't meet artifical criteria -- probably don't even realize what they're missing.
Whatâs the process at your office? With IT becoming the enabling technology in even the most basic government missions, it stands to reason that finding and hiring good IT people is becoming more critical. Is it easier/better to involve IT people in the hiring process or to educate the HR staff?
