The Government Printing Office's acting public printer, William Turri, announced the appointment of six new members to the Depository Library Council late last month.
The council, which has 15 members who serve three-year terms, advises the public printer on policy matters relating to the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). FDLP provides access to the published information of all three government branches.
The six new members are:
Gwen Sinclair, a librarian in Government Documents and Maps at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Library. She has been a government documents librarian for eight years, five of those as head of the department. Sinclair is the first council member to have been appointed from the Pacific island region.
Victoria Trotta, associate dean for information technology and the Ross-Blakley Law Library at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. She has directed the law library since 2000, and has been in her current position for five years.
Christopher Greer, a senior adviser for digital data at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va. He is responsible for strategic planning for digital data activities in the new Office of Cyberinfrastructure. Greer recently was executive secretary at the Long-lived Digital Data Collections Activities of the National Science Board and is currently co-chairman of the Digital Data Interagency Working Group of the National Science and Technology Council's Committee on Science.
Kathryn Lawhun, chief of main at the San Francisco Public Library. Lawhun changed the way San Francisco's Government Information Center collects, stores and provides access to the collection. She shifted from print to virtual documents by providing computers, free printing, training, databases, additional indexes, and audio-visual and microform equipment. Lawhun works with document librarians to plan for the future of preserving government documents in every form of media.
John Shuler, an associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is the bibliographer for Urban Planning and Government Information/Documents Librarian in the Library's Collections Development Department. Previously he was head of the documents department at Colgate University. He worked with GPO to create its first formal partnership with FDLP, and spearheaded a 30-library virtual reference collaboration.
Kendall Wiggin, state librarian at Connecticut State Library, who will serve a two-year term and replace Richard Akeroyd. Wiggin was previously director of libraries at the New Hampshire State Library.
He has also was on the board of directors of the New England Document Conservation Center and Libraries for the Future. He is responsible for a large historic collection of government documents, and he plans to work with GPO on their digitization and preservation.
