In regard to “Handhelds, laptops increase IT security worries, survey finds,” The use and daily loss of unencrypted memory sticks nationwide is an element not broadcast across the news media, as is the loss of laptop computers. These devices are constantly observed in the open, dangling from pockets, belts, purses, etc., and also are wide open to a snatcher.

Simply stop by a retail distributor and purchase another replacement for each and every memory stick lost. These lost memory sticks are not being issued and controlled by the employer as a controlled item.

Though technology is ever changing, the threats remain basically the same. I remember the same being said when the 3.5" diskette came out (yes ancient history). They were small enough to fit in a shirt pocket and even though now we think how little memory these things had, at the time is was almost like being able to carry an attache' case of papers out in your pocket. The whole thing comes down to two letters, "ab". Making information readily accessable to users also makes it readily accessable to abusers unless one take appropriate precautions.

The comment was made that there were concerns about the 3.5 floppy. This was a small concern. Some documents could be stolen. A virus could be uploaded. The problem with the memory sticks is whole programs and data can be loaded onto a small stick.
