Regarding "NAS panel: Army needs unified net-centric center," unfortunately -- and traditionally -- the Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center at the Army Research Laboratory and a number of other Army and defense organizations compete for mission in addition to funds. The distinction between basic and applied research and technology transition to the field Army is more on paper than in reality. If the National Academy of Sciences' recommendation has the effect of combining the various competing offices into one center at (Aberdeen Proving Grounds), it should be welcomed. Hopefully, it will improve efficiency, reduce redundancy and bring university research and industrial products to the commanders and soldiers on the battlefield rapidly.
