In response to "Giuliani: Federal workforce is too big," maybe Rudy Giuliani hasn't seen the government workforce to know exactly how it works. In my series (1740) alone there are so many staffing shortages we can't get the work accomplished and we have gone automatic. The problem is when the automated system finally was working at full force, some things still had to go through a human set of hands otherwise schools would not have accepted the soldiers' credentials or they would be failing course work. That would have cost the government more money and the soldier hardship that would not have made for a well-rounded soldier and caused mental problems that would not have allowed him to function on the battlefield or anywhere else in this man's Army. Most government employees are contractors, not federal employees. They charge the government the same or more than what a federal employee would cost in the same job. Contractors cannot sign for or obligate the government, so a federal employee is still needed. Contractors can only do what is specifically mentioned in the contract, whereas government employees' job description always reads at the end, "...and other duties as assigned." So, if Giuliani feels that the federal government is too fat, spend a day in my shoes.

If Rudi manages the government and on a larger scale the country like he manages his marriages, we really are in trouble.

Hooray for the letter writer! Bashing the Federal government (indeed, all government workers) has been part of the national pop religion at least since Ronald Reagan's "Glory(?) Days." We are an easy target for anyone wanting to take a cheap shot. If Mr. Giuliani and his ilk want to find bloat in the Federal budget they need to look at those big budget contracts handed over with little oversight to private corporations by people like Mr. Giuliani!

In addition, every time new legislation and regulations are added, each job done by a federal employee expands exponentially. Two examples include increased security in all government areas as well as in human research. Certainly as taxpayers, we don't want a bloated bureaucracy, but jobs that could do previously by one person now require three working overtime!

uing expectations of the public about what "the Government" should be responsible for (including paid care for self-imposed obesity-problems) requires more

Federal blot has been an Urban Myth since I was a kid and I now nearing retirement so do the math. I heard stories where the person only had to come in once a week to pick up his pay check, the rest of the time, he was out on the gold course. Heck, anybody who was a fed or related to fed knew payday came once every two weeks. If you push the teller of the story you go my brother-in-law had a buddy who work with this gal who work for a company supplying the fed with Wigets. When I was in private industry, I saw more fraud, waste, and abuse then I ever saw in any of the federal agencies I worked for over the years.
