The Defense Department’s smart card expert, Michael Butler, will work with the General Services Administration on GSA’s governmentwide Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 implementation.
Butler will work directly with agencies to help them adopt identity verification cards for their employees. He started June 19 and will work through December. Agencies must start issuing the cards by Oct. 27.
Butler, chairman of the Government Smart Card Interagency Advisory Board, worked on the military’s Common Access Card program, which was deployed in 2000.
“I think he’ll be a strong addition to GSA’s steam because he brings experience of actually implementing a large smart card program and can use his past experience to help with agencies that are just starting out,” said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance. “I think anything they can do to bring practical experience to the decision-making process will be a good thing for HSPD-12.”
