President Bush announced this week that he intends to nominate John Young, director of Defense research and engineering, to be the next undersecretary of Defense for acquisition, technology and logistics, according to a White House statement.

If confirmed by the Senate, Young would replace Kenneth Krieg, who announced his resignation earlier this month.

The undersecretary of Defense for acquisition, technology and logistics manages the military’s multibillion-dollar weapon systems acquisitions.

During his tenure, Krieg played a central role in implementing institutional and governance reforms mandated by the 2005 Quadrennial Defense Review.

Before becoming director of Defense research and engineering, Young was assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition.
